Amazon caught a tremendous PR wave after its “60 Minutes” profile in which Jeff Bezos unveiled the company’s prototype work on delivery by drone. Whether this becomes a reality (for UPS, FedEx, and so forth) is a different issue, but there is little doubt about Amazon’s commitment to innovation. Here’s my comment from a recent RetailWire panel discussion:
If drones become a feasible, safe and cost-efficient way to deliver same-day goods to consumers, leave it to Amazon to figure it out. The demonstration on 60 Minutes involved a small package, so it’s hard to know how the technology works for bulkier or heavier packages…but I’m sure Amazon is working on it. It’s exciting to see this company continuing to reinvent the e-commerce experience, which has been part of its heritage ever since it began as a book-ordering site.
