Dollar General: Late to the e-commerce party?

From a recent RetailWire discussion about Dollar General and its announced plan to enter the world of e-commerce: I believe this is going to be a challenge based on its initial plans…

Granted, dollar stores offer more edited assortments than their larger brick-and-mortar competitors…but a 1000-SKU assortment doesn’t sound very impactful. The sort of opening prices and inexpensive commodity goods carried in a Dollar General store may not get the attention of the online shopper looking for extreme value.

It would also be interesting to know more about the sort of IT and infrastructure spending needed to make an e-commerce site work, and whether Dollar General has made that investment. Time will tell, but this move feels like a concession by DGrather than a genuine sales driver.
